Owl Nest

We like to walk around whatever neighborhood we live in and find things that you wouldn’t normally notice. Today we walked down into the washout gulch down the road from our house.

This never occurred to me before, but apparently owls will roost in dirt walls. There was a hole a ways up the edge of the gulch, and there was streaking and a ton of tiny animal bones at the bottom of it. So, even though I don’t have any proof, I’m preeeetty sure it was an owl nest.

I can’t help but think this sort of thing is really cool. So I collected some of the owl pellets to dissect at home later. I had a biology class in high school where we did that, and it was awesome albeit slightly disgusting.

It might be kinda gross, but just think of how much vermin owls eliminate!

It does explain why I’ve been hearing owls hooting at night. I looked it up, and I guess Great Horned Owls are common around here. Or, at least, as common as they can be when there are so few trees. So they improvise and live in holes.
